Paper pieced paper plane pattern pillow. Now say this three times out loud!
I finished the first gift for my godson’s christening. I ran a bit short on ideas for baby boy gifts. As I had already made a quilt for him, that was out. My mum suggested I just make him a pillow and that idea grew on me.
As a pillow isn’t a typical gift for a baby, I wanted to make it with a distinctively child-ish motiv. When I came across this free paper plane block pattern by Quiet Play on Craftsy, it was a great fit for just that purpose.
This was my first try at foundation piecing and I love it!! So precise and no hand sewing involved. win win!
I actually wanted to pick a different colour scheme but decided to use the same fabrics I had used in his quilt, so everything goes together.
The tags add a bit of fun for the little one.
The back of the pillow is a simple envelope finish. It can double as a sleeping bag for one of his softies. This idea didn’t come to me until later on. I love that between the plane and the tags it’s the third baby feature on this simple pillow.
Now off to sew him a special softie to go with it.
Have a great weekend!

How darling!!!! What a lucky Godson you have. :) And such a lovely blog you have as well. I’ve enjoyed taking a look around.
Beautiful, really beautiful. What a great idea and so beautifully put together.
That pillow is adorable! I’ll be sure to check out the pattern for the paper air plane.

I think the pillow is a perfect gift. Your quadruple tongue twister paper pieced paper plane pillow is gorgeous.
This is such a lovely idea for a small child.
SO, so cute! Paper piecing can be so much fun!
What a great pillow! I am sure it will be well loved – it is too cute not to be!
That pillow is super cute. Love the paper airplane and the addition of the little loops. So great!
I had so much fun adding the little extras as I went and transform it into a baby “toy” rather than a simple pillow case. Thank you a lot for your nice words, Carol!
Lovely pillow. I like how the first picture really makes it look like it’s flying through the air. Excellent work!
I just went back to look at that, and you’re right =) That’s funny because it’s actually just lying flat on my bed! Thank you for your lovely comment, Rachel!
I’ve been eyeing that paper airplane block for a while now… great idea to make it into a pillow. And I just used that Laurie Wisburn stripe and dot fabric to bind a white. Love aqua & red!
I just saw that project of yours, and YES! that’s a perfect binding fabric, I haven’t even thought of using it for that! Thank you for leaving me that lovely comment, Jenn!
What a fun pillow! I’ll bet it becomes a favorite snuggle pillow of your godson as he grows.
that would make me super happy! Thank you for your lovely words.

thank you so much Cindy! =)
Your fabric choices and straight-line quilting make the paper pieced plane stand out nicely. Oh, and I don’t think I can say that whole bit even one time fast.
it’s definitely a tongue twister :-) Thank you so much for your lovely comment!
This is so fun and cute!! I love it!
Hey Kimberly, thank you so much for your lovely comment. I saw your quilt featured on Fabric Tuesday and it’s awesome!
