[BQF] rainbow entry: it’s a hexi world

While the industry celebrated new and upcoming fabrics and sewing tools at the Quilt Market in Houston this past weekend, the Internet (well, Amy’s Creative Side) celebrates the Blogger’s Quilt Festival for all us folks who stayed home. Besides it being a neat way to show your own favourite project off it’s also a place to meet other bloggers and dive into some new-to-you blogs.

I decided to enter my Hexagon World Map Quilt into the ROYGBIV (rainbow) category. I made it during the summer from lots of scraps I had left over, so it has all colours of the rainbow starting with blue in Alaska to violet in East Asia.
The Hexagons were appliquéd with straight lines running from corner to corner. If you want to read more about this quilt, how and why I made it, check out my original post for it.

The voting on the various categories starts November 1st. So make sure to check out all the entries and vote for your favourites to win some lovely prizes.

paper plane pillow

Paper Plane Pillow | veni vidi vicky

Paper pieced paper plane pattern pillow. Now say this three times out loud!

I finished the first gift for my godson’s christening. I ran a bit short on ideas for baby boy gifts. As I had already made a quilt for him, that was out. My mum suggested I just make him a pillow and that idea grew on me.

As a pillow isn’t a typical gift for a baby, I wanted to make it with a distinctively child-ish motiv. When I came across this free paper plane block pattern by Quiet Play on Craftsy, it was a great fit for just that purpose.

This was my first try at  foundation piecing and I love it!! So precise and no hand sewing involved. win win!
I actually wanted to pick a different colour scheme but decided to use the same fabrics I had used in his quilt, so everything goes together.

The tags add a bit of fun for the little one.

The back of the pillow is a simple envelope finish. It can double as a sleeping bag for one of his softies. This idea didn’t come to me until later on. I love that between the plane and the tags it’s the third baby feature on this simple pillow.

Now off to sew him a special softie to go with it.
Have a great weekend!

hexies and triangle corners – a tiny mini quilt

mini triangle hexi quilt . veni vidi vicky 04

I made a tiny mini quilt out of leftover hexagons and the need to practice something I’ve never done before – corners that aren’t 90° in shape. I want to use this new-to-me finishing look for a table runner but feared I would mess the whole thing up. So I took a couple of hexies I had left from that very project to make them into a triangle-y shaped small quilt.

Aren’t small things the cutest? Babies, puppies, kittens, mini quilts…

I really worried too much about the corners, it’s no big change to regular ones. But I’m happy I got this cute little thing out of my trial. The look of the cut off corners might even look good on a square sized quilt, I might have to try that out sometime.

Hope you all have a good start into your weekend. Happy 3. Oktober to my fellow German dwellers, 25 years of our united country is pretty superb!

around the world blog hop

Hey! You just hopped to Germany thanks to the lovely Kinga at Kinga Isabella Quilts. I recommend visiting her blog if you haven’t already. The other week she posted a tutorial for a craft supplies storage box. So handy!

The idea is to have a never ending blog hop connecting quilters all over the world. Pretty cool if you ask me!

1. What am I working on?
There are some projects in the planning phase at the moment. Like I’m pulling fabric for an Africa inspired quilt for my godmother, who lost her heart to Africa teaching there for a couple of years. I’m also going to be a godmother myself, so I’m working on a baptism gift for my (future) godson. I already made him a quilt when he was first born (the bottom right one in the collage above) so I need to come up with something other than a quilt. There’s a quilt top I made in early summer that needs to be quilted. I’m also working on making it into a pattern, but that’s going real slowly.
And shhh… I’m working on a secret project which involves taking Christmas-y pictures in September – who have I become?

2. How does my work differ from others in its genre?
That’s a rather tough question for me to answer seeing as I’ve only been quilting for a couple of months. One thing that I might be doing “differently” is that I don’t really use patterns. Coming from an architectural background I feel like my brain knows how to work with geometry and math and I enjoy the process of sketching and calculating.
My fabric stash is still really small so I’ve ben using a lot of versatile solids and blenders and not as many prints as other quilters do. Even with my recent purchase from the US, I felt very drawn to solid fabrics. Maybe that’s my thing and I will stick to it?

3. Why do I create what I do?
I just LOVE to actually make things. It’s so satisfying to me to work on something and to hold it in my hands afterwards. I’ve always been a creative person, but I hadn’t quite found my outlet prior to stumbling across quilting. Quilts and pillows make great gifts and I love giving handmade goods, that motivates me so much!

4. How does my creative process work?
oh, lots of sketching and risk taking. I have a long quilty bucket list but the things I actually make are often decided on a whim. I see something I like, make some sketches, calculations, pull fabrics and just make it. I sometimes regret not taking more time to consider my options before I start and will doubt what I do half way through. Like with this table runner I made, I was lukewarm on it before quilting. But it turned out rather nicely in the end, if I say so myself.

The final cool part of the blog hop is to pick two other quilters to continue with the fun:

          OPTIMISTheader_zps8d6b00e0hollygetsquilty
Holly who used to be @hollyreid on instagram (now @hollygetsquilty) just went live with her gorgeous (!) new blog Holly Gets Quilty. Even just looking at her blog layout you can tell she has a great eye for colour and geometry.

And meet Michele from Undiscovered Optimist. I love her personal relationship to quilting, you can feel her passion through her words. She makes beautiful things and has such a good way with combining prints.

I’m excited to see where else the blog hop will take us.
